With sports participation in the UK more popular than ever, particularly following the huge success of the British Olympic and Paralympic teams in the summer 2016, SportSpine at NSpine 2017 focuses on three topics that are highly relevant to sportsmen and women at all levels. In the morning session on spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis we are honoured to host two high-profile sports injury specialists and three spinal surgeons. The Chief Medical Officers of UK Athletics and the English and Welsh Cricket Board, Drs. Robin Chakraverty and Nick Peirce will present on the non-surgical management of these conditions in elite athletes. Mike Hutton, Lester Wilson and Thanos Tsirikos bring to the symposium very considerable surgical knowledge and expertise as well as experience of direct involvement in sport at the highest levels.
After lunch the focus moves to the cervical spine, an area of very considerable interest to spinal surgeons who treat sports people. Mike Hutton speaks again from his own experience as a professional rugby player with Harlequins and he is followed by two eminent spinal surgeons, Richard Nelson and Paul Davies, both of whom have made major contributions to our knowledge about the management of cervical injuries in elite sports women and men.
The final session adds an international flavour. Prof. Michael Mayer is a spinal surgeon at the Schoen Klinik, Munich Harlaching who is also the senior clinician for Bayern Munich. His insight into managing back pain in professional soccer players will be of huge interest to all practitioners who look after players of the game at whatever level. Paul Davies has been the go-to surgeon for all the professional rugby players in South Wales for almost two decades and as a result he has a wealth of experience that allows him to talk with great authority about back pain in rugby players.
Bringing the day to a close with a view from the forefront of technology, Martin Gossling, the CEO of 270 Vision Ltd, will describe the unique Body Position Monitoring technology that his company has developed that allows therapists and clinicians to accurately measure range and quality of movement of any major joint in the body. This technology has been used extensively in the professional and amateur sports sectors most notably by a number of Premiership soccer clubs in the UK with great success in managing and preventing injuries to players.
