Dr Pedro Berjano, MD, PhD, graduated in Medicine in Spain in 1988. He followed postgraduate studies in Epidemiology and Public Health, and completed the speciality programs in Family Medicine and then in Orthopedics. His activity has been devoted to spine surgery, and he completed a PhD degree with a thesis on biomechanical evaluation of a novel anterior spine fusion method. Since 2003 he moved to Italy where he joined the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi Research Hospital (the most relevant orthopedic and spine institution in Italy) and became a Head of Division in 2013. Currently he co-Chairs with Claudio Lamartina MD the GSpine Spine Surgery Division at Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi, Milan (I).

Research, education and improving standards of clinical care have been the drivers of his activity in the last five years. His main focus in research is Adult Deformity and Advanced Techniques in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. With Claudio Lamartina MD he has published new classification systems for sagittal imbalance and adult scoliosis and new techniques for spinal deformity surgery. He has participated as a chairman and faculty in relevant educational activities of the Spine Society of Europe, AOSpine, Society for Lateral Access Surgery, Italian Spine Society and University of Turin (I), among others.

Currently, Dr Berjano is considered one of the top spine surgeons in Europe. In the field of minimally invasive techniques for spinal fusion, he is acknowledged as one of the world’s top spine surgeons.
